The Phantom of the Opera (1909)

Palais Garnier Opera House

Paris, France
The opulent Palais Garnier Opera House is the setting for Christine's rise to fame, the Phantom's reign of terror, and the heart of the mystery surrounding him. The opera house's labyrinthine passages, Grand Foyer, and cellars become Christine's playground and the Phantom's domain. Christine, a young chorus girl, is summoned to the box of the terrifying but powerful voice known only as the 'Angel of Music.'
"It was a bewildering sight, a mountain of stone and gold, with a great flight of steps leading up to a porch with many pillars. Statues stood here and there in the flickering light, and right at the top, on the peak of the roof, a gilded figure of Apollo with his lyre seemed to be aiming his arrow at the moon."

The Lake

Paris, France
The underground lake beneath the opera house is the Phantom's secret world. Here, Christine discovers his lair, a fantastic gondola fashioned from a Paris Opera House phantom boat. It is filled with his inventions and reflects his lonely existence.
"It was a wide-spreading sheet of water, apparently of great depth, and its surface, reflecting the feeble light of the lantern which Christine held above her head, gleamed like a black mirror..."

The Rooftops of Paris

Paris, France
The bustling rooftops of Paris become a stage for Christine's flight from the Phantom and Raoul's pursuit. As Christine flees across the rooftops, she sees the gaslights outlining the shape of the Palais Garnier far below.
"Paris! The whole of Paris stretched out beneath them, a glittering sea of lights, a distant murmur reaching their ears. The moon, veiled in light clouds, cast a faint silvery sheen upon the housetops..."
